چکیده
In Australia, declining water quality in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is a threat to its marine ecosystems and nitrate (NO3?) from sugar cane-dominated agricultural areas coastal catchments of North Queensland key pollutant concern. Woodchip bioreactors have been identified as potential low-cost remediation technology reduce NO3? runoff cane farms. This study aimed trial different designs (denitrification walls beds) quantify their removal performance distinct tropical climates hydrological regimes that characterize sugarcane farms Queensland. One denitrification wall two beds were installed treat groundwater subsurface tile-drainage wet tropics catchments, where farming relies only on rainfall for crop growth. Two dry assess treating irrigation tailwater sugarcane. All trialled effective at removing NO3?, with exhibiting higher rate (NRR, 2.5 7.1 g N m?3 d?1) compared (0.15 d?1). The NRR depended influent concentration, low concentrations triggered limitation. highest was observed bed tropics, relatively high consistent due use groundwater, elevated irrigation. demonstrates can be useful edge-of-field reducing GBR, when sited designed maximise performance.

Denitrifying Bioreactors for Nitrate Removal: A Meta-Analysis.
Meta-analysis approaches were used in this first quantitative synthesis of denitrifying woodchip bioreactors. Nitrate removal across environmental and design conditions was assessed from 26 published studies, representing 57 separate bioreactor units (i.e., walls, beds, and laboratory columns). Effect size calculations weighted the data based on variance and number of measurements for each bior...
متن کاملDenitrifying Bioreactors Resist Disturbance from Fluctuating Water Levels
Nitrate can be removed from wastewater streams, including subsurface agricultural drainage systems, using woodchip bioreactors to promote microbial denitrification. However, the variations in water flow in these systems could make reliable performance from this microbially-mediated process a challenge. In the current work, the effects of fluctuating water levels on nitrate removal, denitrifying...
متن کاملPlastic Biofilm Carrier after Corn Cobs Reduces Nitrate Loading in Laboratory Denitrifying Bioreactors.
Nitrate-nitrogen (nitrate-N) removal rates can be increased substantially in denitrifying bioreactors with a corn ( L.) cob bed medium compared with woodchips; however, additional organic carbon (C) is released into the effluent. This laboratory column experiment was conducted to test the performance of a postbed chamber of inert plastic biofilm carrier (PBC) after corn cobs (CC) to extend the ...
متن کاملTemperature and Substrate Control Woodchip Bioreactor Performance in Reducing Tile Nitrate Loads in East-Central Illinois.
Tile drainage is the major source of nitrate in the upper Midwest, and end-of-tile removal techniques such as wood chip bioreactors have been installed that allow current farming practices to continue, with nitrate removed through denitrification. There have been few multiyear studies of bioreactors examining controls on nitrate removal rates. We evaluated the nitrate removal performance of two...
متن کاملInfluence of carbon source on nitrate removal of contaminated groundwater in a denitrifying submerged filter.
The effectiveness of three selected carbon sources (sucrose, ethanol and methanol) on submerged filters for the removal of nitrate from contaminated groundwater (100mg NO3(-)/litre), was studied. Process yields, nitrite accumulation, biomass production and growth of denitrifying bacteria were compared. Process yields, represented as ratio C/N were 2.5, 1.08 and 1.1 for sucrose, ethanol and meth...
